Build a Legacy

Beyond Profit with Purpose

In the far, far north of the main Fiji island, in a place called Volivoli—so nice they named it twice—I’ve been wrapping up a week of dive adventures. But beyond the stunning coral reefs and vibrant marine life, what’s been truly spectacular are the business relationships built here. Just a few episodes ago, I shared how I met people who will be part of my future, made meaningful contributions to the lives of those around me, and, of course, enjoyed some world-class scuba diving. This place is amazing, and so are its people.

But let’s dive deeper (pun intended) into something more profound. Did you know that 70% of consumers prefer to support companies that give back to society and champion causes they care about? As a founder or entrepreneur, you’re in a unique position to make a real difference. So, how are you using your influence?

I’ve always believed that success carries a responsibility—a mission, even—to give back and share that success. It’s not just a good thing to do; it’s essential. I’m not a fan of government programs that keep people dependent and politicians in power. But when the business community steps up, amazing things happen. We, as leaders, are uniquely positioned to impact worthy causes and uplift communities. So, the real question is, are you ready to turn your success into significance?

Integrating Purpose into Your Business

Align your business with a cause that resonates with your values and those of your customers. Whether it’s supporting education, environmental sustainability, or social justice, integrating purpose into your business model does more than create a positive impact. It also strengthens your brand’s identity and deepens your connection with your audience. Today’s consumers are more discerning than ever, and they’re looking to support companies that share their values.

Leveraging Resources and Networks

As an entrepreneur, you have access to resources, networks, and expertise that can be invaluable to worthy causes. Consider offering your skills, products, or services pro bono to nonprofits or community organizations. Use your platform to raise awareness and mobilize your network to support initiatives that matter to you. This not only amplifies your impact but also enhances your reputation as a leader who cares.

Fostering a Culture of Giving

Encourage a culture of giving within your company. Involve your team in philanthropic efforts—whether through volunteer programs, donation matching, or company-sponsored community projects. When giving back becomes a shared mission, it fosters a sense of purpose and unity within your organization. Your employees will feel more connected to the company’s mission, and this can lead to higher engagement and loyalty.

A Lesson from Fiji: Sharing What You Have

During my time in a Fijian village, I was struck by their incredible hospitality. One of the men explained that it is their tradition to invite people in—strangers, anyone passing by. “Because if you have something, even a little bit, you have something to share,” he said. That was the most impactful statement of this entire trip. It reminded me that no matter where we are on our entrepreneurial journey, we all have something to give.

Key Takeaway

Your success isn’t just measured by profits and growth. It’s also about the positive impact you can make on the world. By integrating purpose into your business, leveraging your resources, and fostering a culture of giving, you can create a legacy that extends far beyond your bottom line.

Conclusion

As founders, entrepreneurs, and leaders, we are in a privileged position to give back and make a difference. The time to act isn’t “someday.” It’s today. Because if you have something—even a little bit—you have something to share. So, let’s turn our success into significance and leave a lasting impact on the world, one meaningful action at a time.
