Founders and Flying Penguins:

Overcoming Circumstances to Soar

What do flying penguins and entrepreneurs have in common? Wait, what? Flying Penguins?

In April 2008, the BBC shocked the world by releasing a preview for an upcoming film called

Flying Penguins

It showcased penguins on a remote island that had learned to fly. The stunning cinematography captured flocks of penguins circling and running to take off like albatrosses. Amazing! Of course, we all know penguins don’t fly… or do they?

Did you know that some of the most successful founders started with nothing but a dream? They saw a problem in the world and said, “I can solve that.” They didn’t have the mechanism, they didn’t know exactly how, but there was a belief that they could. So they did. It’s such a privilege to meet and work with founders who ignore limitations, overcome incredible odds, and build amazing businesses. Just like those flying penguins, founders bypass limitations, socioeconomic backgrounds, lack of funding, and inexperience to create extraordinary businesses. They defy conventional wisdom and make the impossible possible. Of course, the difference is that founders do it for real. Yeah, penguins don’t really fly. It was April 1, 2008, and one of the best April Fools’ pranks ever.

The entrepreneurial journey is fraught with obstacles. Many aspiring founders face daunting challenges such as limited resources, unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, and a lack of industry experience. Conventional wisdom suggests that these hurdles are insurmountable. Entrepreneurs don’t live by conventional wisdom. How do they do it? I’ve interviewed over 300 founders and in those conversations, I’ve heard 8 key things over and over. Let’s explore three of those strategies that successful founders use to overcome the odds and soar:

1. Relentless Determination:

Successful founders possess an unwavering drive to succeed. They refuse to be defined by their circumstances and are determined to turn their vision into reality. They know they will succeed. This relentless determination fuels their ability to persevere through setbacks and remain focused on their goals. That doesn’t mean there aren’t down days or times when they want to quit. They just don’t.

2. Creative Problem-Solving:

When faced with limitations, these founders think outside the box. They find innovative ways to stretch their resources, tap into unconventional funding sources, and leverage their unique perspectives. By approaching problems creatively, they uncover solutions that others overlook. Best practices are the starting point. They’re best practices because someone hasn’t found a better solution… and they often do.

3. Build Strong Networks:

Successful founders understand the power of community and mentorship. They actively seek out advisors, peers, and supporters who can provide guidance, share insights, and open doors. That’s one way CLG serves the SaaS founder community. Building a strong network helps them gain access to resources and opportunities that accelerate their growth.

Key Takeaway:

Overcoming the odds as a founder is not about having the perfect start; it’s about starting from where you are, limitations and all. Step up. Defy the odds with relentless determination, creatively solving problems, and leveraging those strong networks.

Conclusion:

By embracing these strategies, you too can achieve the impossible and build a business that soars. Maybe penguins should take a lesson from entrepreneurs? Who knows, maybe they really can fly but gave up too soon?
