Freedom is running YOUR business

never the business running you

Ever find yourself physically on vacation but mentally still at work? You're not alone. In part two of our series on Freedom, we’ll dive into how you can truly disconnect and be present, ensuring you enjoy your time off to the fullest.

The Challenge of Switching Off

In my last video, I emphasized the importance of taking time off. Now, let’s tackle the art of effective delegation and mental detachment so you can recharge without the stress of being in two places at once. Many leaders struggle to switch off their work brain, even while on vacation. The constant urge to check emails, the fear of missing out on crucial decisions, and the need to stay in control can prevent you from relaxing. This mental tug-of-war leaves you more exhausted than before. So, how do you delegate effectively and mentally let go?

Personal Experiences: Lessons from the Field

The DisneyWorld Debacle

Picture this: I’m in a DisneyWorld parking lot, stuck for 90 minutes, desperately trying to handle work matters while my family waits patiently. It sucked. That experience was a turning point. I knew something had to change.

The Bahamas Breakthrough

Fast forward to a family trip to the Bahamas, packed with scuba diving and quality time. I was determined to truly disconnect. Toward the end, I extended my stay to meet up with other founders. We spent our days diving, attending ninja school, and masterminding on a bullet train. The result? Unmatched camaraderie and invaluable insights.

However, not all founders managed to stay. Business crises at home prompted three of them to cut their trip short. Their struggles reminded me of my past challenges. One of them managed to stay after our pep talk. The rest? They needed more convincing.

## Strategies for Effective Delegation and Mental Detachment

1. Prepare Your Team & Delegate Well

Before you leave, inform your team about your absence. Assign a reliable point person and trust them to handle things. Remember the Fire-Blood rule—it’s a game changer!

2. Set Clear Boundaries

Set up an out-of-office email response and make it clear that you won’t be checking emails or messages. This helps manage expectations and reduces the temptation to stay connected.

3. Practice Mindfulness and Presence

Once on vacation, engage in activities that require your full attention. Whether it’s reading, hiking, or spending time with loved ones, immerse yourself fully. Mindfulness exercises, like deep breathing or meditation, can also help you stay grounded and present.

Key Takeaway

Wherever you are, be there.** When at work, be fully engaged. When on vacation or at home, be entirely present. This balance ensures you reap the full benefits of your time off and return refreshed, ready to tackle challenges with renewed energy.

Conclusion

Taking time off isn't just about physical absence from work; it’s about mental detachment and genuine presence. The first couple of days might be tough, but once you’re fully present, you’ll notice a significant difference in your well-being and productivity. When I returned from the Bahamas, I was more relaxed, and my team thrived in my absence, solving problems independently and growing more confident.

So, this summer, take that much-needed break. Enjoy the time with your family, recenter yourself, and return with a fresh perspective. You’ll never regret the moments spent truly disconnecting and being present. It’s a game changer for your well-being and your business.
