Over the past week, I had the privilege of spending time in Fiji with some of the smartest and most generous leaders I've ever met—people who have shaped my journey in ways I never could have anticipated. One of the most valuable aspects of being part of a peer group is the collective wisdom you gain access to. Imagine sitting in a room with leaders who have faced the same challenges you’re currently grappling with—but have already come out the other side. They bring fresh perspectives that can help you see solutions you might have overlooked. Over the years, my peer group has given me invaluable advice that has not only accelerated problem-solving but has also sparked innovative ideas. They’ve helped me navigate complex situations with insights that only someone who’s been there before can offer.
Leading a company can be a lonely endeavor. The pressure to perform and the weight of decision-making can sometimes feel overwhelming. Peer groups provide a safe haven where you can share your struggles without fear of judgment. These are people who understand the unique pressures of leadership and offer support when you need it most. My group has been there for me through the highs and lows—when I was burning out, when I was ready to quit, and when I was ready to soar. This kind of emotional support is priceless, and it’s something every leader should have in their corner.
Another significant benefit of being part of a strong peer group is the expanded network it provides. These connections open doors to opportunities you might never have considered. For example, I’ve had the chance to sit between someone who has won 21 Emmys and another who has 16 Grammys. These are networks that I wouldn’t have accessed otherwise, and they’ve led to strategic partnerships, collaborations, and friendships that have profoundly impacted my business. Every time I meet with this group, I leave feeling different—marked by the experience in a way that propels me forward.
Your network is more than just a collection of business cards—it’s a source of wisdom, support, and opportunities that can transform your leadership journey. The people you surround yourself with will either lift you up or hold you back, so choose wisely.
